Meet Maria

24 years of LCCU

Nearly three decades ago, María Montiel began a new life in the United States. Along the way, she discovered Latino Credit Union through a TV ad. “It meant so much to me,” María recalls, “because we are in a different country, and finding a place where they serve us in our own language and with respect is invaluable.”

María opened her account 24 years ago at LCCU’s very first branch in Charlotte, located in the Independence “golden” Tower. Over time, she witnessed the credit union’s growth, from the opening of the second branch on South Blvd, across from today’s building, to now, where she continues to be a loyal member at the South Blvd branch. “My children, my husband, my siblings, are members. We’ve all felt very comfortable here throughout the years.”

The first big step came in 2004, when she obtained her very first loan to purchase a car. It was the beginning of a trusting relationship that allowed her to dream and plan for the future. Thanks to the financial guidance and tools she received at LCCU, she was able to save, support her children’s education, and now she’s thinking about the future of her granddaughters, “We want them to learn from a young age how to save, take care of their money, and always have a plan for tomorrow.” For María, the benefits go far beyond financial products, what she values most is the support, the guidance, and the human warmth. “I feel very comfortable here because when I walk in, I feel the confidence to interact with the people. For me, LCCU is not just a branch, it’s a family.”

Today, after more than two decades as a member, María reaffirms her commitment: “I would never change LCCU. They always help us here. I recommend it with all my heart because there is no other place like this.” Her story is proof that when an institution believes in people, dreams flourish and communities grow stronger. For more than 20 years, María Montiel has not only trusted us; she also embodies the spirit of perseverance, gratitude, and community that defines us.
